The 'Vecta', the new Voith Schneider propelled vessel built by John I Thornycroft and Co Ltd, for the Southampton, Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Co Ltd, was launched at Southampton by the Hon Mrs E Pleydell Bouverie. The new vessel is equipped with two Voith Schneider propellers and dispenses with a rudder. The Voith Schneider propeller consists of six vertical blades. They provide an infinitely variable pitch and all steering is done with their aid, giving the ship exceptional manoeuvrability. Photo shows,

She is the first of nine similar ships to be built for the B.P. Company - and is the first vessel constructed in this country - incorporating the Voith Schneider Cycloidal propleer..
