Osawatomie is a historic place, as it was the horr^e of John Brown, and is the place where the now famous Battle of Osawatomie wasfought. A monument to the memory of John Brown has been erectedwithin two blocks of the depot, and is visited by many tourists. The Missouri Pacific Railway Company has extensive machine and car shops here, yards, and superintendents headquarters, employing several hundred men. OTTAWA. Population, 7, 569. The railway repair shops are located here, withlarge and commodious buildings, round-houses, etc., employing 200 men;. three grain elevators, three banks, three mills, weekly newspapers anddaily newspapers, extensive nurseries, an excellent creamery, foundry, planing mill, furniture factory, soap factory, cob pipe factory, wirefence factories, and no saloons. Recently there has been organized anatural gas and development company, which has put down profitablewells. Forest Park is the pride of the city. It is splendidly im-proved and fitted up with buildings of various kinds, wherein areheld the county fair and widely known Chautauqua Assembly. Thereare four graded schools, a commercial college and a Baptist university, with a full college course. Ottawa is literally a city of churches, there being eighteen church buildings. The First Baptist Church isone of the finest in the state. The Rohrbaugh is considered thelargest and finest opera house in Kansas. 115
